Grace for the Back-to-School Rush: Finding Rest When the Season Feels Overwhelming

The backpacks are packed, the lunchboxes are labeled, and the alarm clock is set earlier than anyone would like. Back-to-school season always sneaks up on us. If you’re like me, you might be both relieved and exhausted — excited for fresh routines but already drained by the planning, carpool lines, and endless permission slips. Mama, I see you. You’re tired. And you’re not alone.
In these seasons where life feels busy and full, it’s easy to get caught up in the rush and forget that God offers us rest — even in the middle of school mornings and after-school chaos.
Matthew 11:28 reminds us: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Here are a few reminders as you step into this new school year:
1. Release the Pressure to Be Perfect
You don’t have to have picture-perfect lunches, spotless uniforms, or flawlessly calm mornings. Your kids don’t need a perfect mom; they need a present one. When you feel like you’re not enough, remember that His grace fills in the gaps. One of my favorite phrases is "do your best and give God the rest!" It's great for moms and kids alike.
2. Build in Little Pauses
Rest doesn’t have to look like an afternoon nap (though those are glorious when they happen!). Rest can be a deep breath in the car after drop-off, a whispered prayer while folding laundry, or a five-minute walk outside. Small pauses invite peace into ordinary moments.
3. Speak Truth Over Your Day
Instead of letting the to-do list run your heart, start your mornings with a short prayer or verse. A simple, “Lord, help me walk in Your peace today,” can re-center your perspective. Sticky notes with Scripture on the fridge or bathroom mirror can remind you where true strength comes from.
4. Remember You’re Modeling More Than Routines
Your children will remember more than how fast you got them out the door. They’ll remember the love, patience, and faith they saw in you. Even when it feels messy, you’re planting seeds of trust in God that will last far beyond this school year.
My sweet friend, God is already here, in the carpools, in the late-night homework, and even in your weary heart. Bring to Him all the things weighing down your heart today and every day. Rest in Him — that’s the best back-to-school gift you can give yourself.

Love you, mama!
